How do I add (or remove) a Class to a Community?

Classes can be added or removed from Communities several different ways. A Class can only be removed from a Community by the Community Lead or the Class Lead. In order for a Class to be added to a Community one of the following must be true:

  • It is a new Class, or

  • The Class Lead is a Community Member, or

  • The Community Lead is also a Community Lead for a Community where the Class already exists

Note, if roles need to be updated check out the article on updating Community Members.

Generally, you can follow the steps below to edit the Community(ies) of Class(es). We’ve also included a few scenarios to help you determine the steps you may need to take for specific situations.

  1. Sign in

  2. Click Classes in the Community

  3. Select the Class(es) that you’d like to edit by clicking on the box next to the name

  4. Click Edit Communities. A list of Communities the Classes can be added to or removed from appears

  5. Select the Communities you would like to add the Class(es) to and/or deselect the Communities you’d like to remove the Classes from

  6. Click Save Changes to # Class(es)

A Community Lead Creates a New Class

Javier is supporting implementation at “Pioneer School.” He is setting up Classes for instructors. He creates all Classes and assigns instructors as Class Leads by completing the following:

  1. Sign in

  2. Select the Pioneer School Community

  3. Click Classes in the left navigation bar

  4. Click Add Class

  5. Enter a Class name and select a Lead for the Class, then click Add Class to save

☝ What should I name my class? The name you select for a Class should be descriptive of the Class and/or Class Lead. It will be used in email invitations if you add a Class Lead, to label Class reports, and will appear in Community reports. The name will not appear on the student survey. PERTS recommends names like: “Sanchez, English 1, P1” or “Sanchez, 1st Period” rather than names like “PERTS Survey” or “Math All Stars.”

A Community Lead Adds Existing Classes to a Community

Javier is a Community Lead for “Pioneer School” and “Pioneer Math Department” Communities. “Geometry, Sandoval, P2” and “Algebra 1, Toft, P2” are Classes in the Pioneer School Community and Javier wants to add them to the Pioneer Math Department Community.

  2. Click Classes in the Pioneer School Community

  3. Select Geometry, Sandoval, P2 and Algebra 1, Toft, P2 by clicking on the box next to their names

  4. Click Edit CommunitiesA list of Communities the Classes can be added to or removed from appears

  5. Select Pioneer Math Department

  6. Click Save Changes to 2 Classes

Note, if Javier was not already a Community Lead for Pioneer Math Department, an existing Lead could make Javier a Lead through the Member settings in the Community so that Javier could complete these changes.

A Class Lead Adds an Existing Class to a Community

Carolina created her own Community and Classes and would like to add her Classes to the Pioneer Community. Javier, as Community Lead for Pioneer High, adds Carolina as a Community Member to the Pioneer High Community. Then, Carolina can add her Classes to the Pioneer High Community. Carolina can:

  1. Sign in

  2. Click Classes in the Community she created

  3. Select the Classes that she’s like to add to Pioneer High by clicking on the box next to their names

  4. Click Edit CommunitiesA list of Communities the Classes can be added to or removed from appears

  5. Select Pioneer High

  6. Click Save Changes to # Class(es)

  7. At the top of the list of Classes, click “+”  next to Communities

Class Leads should only add Classes to Communities whose Community Lead(s) they know and trust. Doing so allows the Community Lead(s) to access and edit the Class settings, including the student roster.
