What are participants asked on the survey?

Learning / Organizational Conditions

The primary focus of PERTS' surveys is to understand how individuals are experiencing their environment, specifically, the extent to which they are experiencing critical learning or organizational conditions.

The documents linked below describe the conditions measured by each program, as well as the specific questions that participants may be asked. Surveys may contain all or a subset of the associated conditions.

Open-Ended Questions

Participants have two opportunities to share qualitative feedback.

  1. As participants respond to the multiple choice items, one item, at random, opens up for participants to elaborate on their response. It reads, “Please share one specific experience or example that led you to answer this way.” This random selection keeps the survey short for participants while still providing greater insights to those gathering feedback. Note, prior to 2026-27, the question read: “Please explain how you chose your answer. You can also add anything else about your answer that you would like to share.”

  2. Beginning in 2026-27, the survey ends with an additional opportunity for all participants to share qualitative feedback as a response to the following question, “Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experience?” For Elevate, the question is slightly varied to ensure younger students grasp the intent of the question, “Is there anything else you'd like to share with your teacher about your experience?”

Fidelity Questions

Each time a participant takes a survey, they are asked a communication fidelity question to ensure the purpose of the survey has been communicated clearly. Survey questions are included below. Note, because Calibrate can be used for a range of purposes, the communication fidelity question is excluded.

  • Ascend: “My instructor will try to use my answers to this survey to make class better for me.”

  • Calibrate: N/A

  • Catalyze: “My answers to these questions will be used to make things better for me and for students.”

  • Elevate: “My teacher will try to use my answers to this survey to make class better for me.”

Demographic Questions

The first time participants complete the survey, they are asked a few demographic questions that enable us to disaggregate data in different ways (e.g., to show whether girls/women or boys/men experience their environment differently).

Research Questions

From time to time, PERTS will add questions to the survey in order to collect research data. The answers to these questions will not typically appear in reports.

As of 2026-27, surveys do not contain research questions.
